The pre-planned attacks on Dallas and Baton Rouge police in 2016 showed us the lack of adequate armor available to our patrol officers who are always the first to arrive on an active shooter scene. In response to these tragic events, the Adopt-A-Cop #backingtheblue program was started by Brandi Leber of Hopkins County, TX, to bring communities together to adopt officers and provide them with rapid deployment armor that can save their lives. Lamar County Adopt A Cop followed her lead and within 24 hours, all officers in Lamar County were adopted for level-4 vests. Since that time, we have joined with our community to meet safety equipment and training needs for our police and first responders when budgets cannot cover these expenses. Lamar County Adopt a Cop is a 501c3 corporation.
When needs arise within our local departments, we place our officers and/or first responders up for adoption to meet these needs. Members of the community can then adopt that officer or first responder during our Adoption Drives in order to provide the needed equipment. On occasion, we put our first responders up for adoption to unify, build morale, and to remind them just how appreciated they are during difficult times. All adoptions are announced on our Facebook page and the website event page.
